Spinal & Peripheral Nerve Stimulator Pre-Surgical Evaluation

A spinal or peripheral nerve stimulator pre-surgical psychological evaluation is a standard part of the preparation process for individuals considering neuromodulation for chronic pain. The purpose of the evaluation is to help ensure that patients are well prepared for the procedure and to support the best possible outcomes. This evaluation is not a test to “pass” or “fail,” but rather an opportunity to identify strengths, clarify expectations, and address any factors that may affect adjustment or long-term benefit.

 

The evaluation focuses on understanding pain history, current emotional functioning, coping strategies, expectations for the procedure, and how pain has impacted daily life. It also assesses factors such as stress, mood, sleep, and health behaviors that may influence recovery and response to the stimulator. The goal is to provide recommendations that support both the patient and the medical team in treatment planning.

 

The evaluation consists of a single 1-hour appointment, which includes a clinical interview and brief standardized measures as appropriate. Following the appointment, a comprehensive written report is completed and shared with the referring provider. A feedback discussion is also provided to review results, answer questions, and discuss recommendations.

 

Fee: The fee for the pre-surgical evaluation, including the 1-hour assessment, written report, and feedback, is $500.  I do not accept insurance but will be happy to provide a superbill upon request.
